A man is not a plan

Sunday, February 3, 2008

Last semester, I volunteered to teach high school students about insurance. When I arrived at the class, the teacher told me about his idea of educating his students regarding basic finance skills that are useful in the real world (credit, insurance, buying a car, etc.) I was impressed with his obvious care for his students. One comment he made to the women in his class made me smile. He said, "Ladies, a man is not a plan!"

He seemed to be saying that if we just wait around for the knight in shining armor to take care of us the rest of our lives, then we are setting ourselves up for disappointment and dependency. I wish someone had told me that when I was in high school. Now, I still hope a man is PART of my plan, but it's good to know that I can take care of myself and make a positive contribution to the world (even if I never get married). Better late than never, I suppose.
